Ecology and distribution of Maltese everlasting in the Dwejra Area, Gozo.

Abstract

Little is known about neo-endemic plant habitat or how modem management impact these species. To better understand the factors influencing the distribution of rare plants in coastal habitats, the influence of vegetation structure, species composition, environmental ·characteristics and disturbance history on an existing rare plant population and potential natural habitat were subsequently examined. This was accomplished by conducting an intensive plant distribution study and mapping project for an endemic plant - Maltese Everlasting (Helichrysum meltiense) covering the whole West of Gozo between the summer of 2008 and spring of 2009. This rare plant community of the Maltese Everlasting was examined through plant field surveys using sampling techniques throughout the whole study area and inputting the data obtained in several databases. In particular, study on the physiological characteristics such as the height of the plant was examined from a large sample in order to determine the phenology of the plant. Moreover, the habitat and resource requirements were determined in order to evaluate the stability of the populations. Prior to this study, the extant quantity for this rare plant species was unknown with any former studies delivered on this plant were relatively cursory. Thus, the findings show the current amounts of H melitense individuals and its spatial distribution at Dwejra and takes into consideration any related threats for future preservation.
