Abstract: | There aren't many studies that bring together the areas of spirituality and body modification. In this dissertation, I look into body modification mainly through an anthropological, psychological, philosophical and sociological literature in relation to identity creation. Furthermore, through this observation I will give implications to youth ministry as I believe that in their search for identity it is also important that youths also try to find their true identity in and through Jesus Christ and His Church. In these days, tattoo and body piercing are becoming more and more popular and are being practiced for a variety of reasons. Consequently I believe that it is important that a good reflective understanding of these various underlying motivations behind getting tattoo and body piercing is even more required. Firstly, with this dissertation I aim to explain the reasons behind the practice of tattoo and body piercing among Maltese young people. Secondly, after considering the possible relationship between identity, tattooing and body piercing, I reflect on the implications for the youth minister. Self-esteem and identity are two important themes because feeling pleased and comfortable about oneself may affect how a person acts and behaves with other people. Finally, my hope is that this dissertation will offer insights into the reasons on why tattooing and body piercing are being practiced in Malta and how to meet the requirements of this subculture through youth ministry. |
