Abstract: The importance of a city is assessed on the basis of particular elements and features that distinguish it and set it apart. With the birth of Valletta in the 16th century, it soon took on the status of Malta's capital city. The buildings, the functions and the importance which this city came to bear, made foreigners want to visit and explore it. After all, it was the result of the victory of the Order of St John over the Turkish Porte in 1565, an event that indeed signified a 'Great' Siege for many.
