A geographical aspect of Kemmuna and Kemmunet

Abstract

The words on the emblem of Kemmuna and Kemmunett clearly denote their position in the Maltese archipelago - Moror Inter Aras which means "reposing between guardians" ( i.e. between Malta and Gozo ). Kemmuna and Kemmunett are typical natural characteristics of the Maltese landscape. This can be seen throughout their landscape which is rich in geomorphological and ecological features. The diverse landforms of the islets give rise to an interesting study of their possible origin. The particular ecology varies from typical Maltese habitats to ones which are becoming increasingly rare in the Maltese islands ( e.g. sand dunes; saline marshland ). Kemmuna also hosts a number of ecological species which occur only on the islet throughout the Maltese Islands. The physical features are not the only dominant factor which prevails on the islets. Kemmuna and Kemmunett are rich in culture. This can be seen by the richness of place-names, cultural and historical structures. However the islets have also suffered under the toll of human activity. Degradation on the islets is wide-spread and there was little control up till now from the authorities. Hence the study of the physical and human aspects of the geography of the islets is the first step to upgrade their environment. This provides the basis for recommendations to achieve sustainable future utilisation of Kemmuna and Kemmunett.
