Peace studies is a relatively new area in the social sciences which is still striving for recognition as a discipline in its own right. The study is based on the fundamental belief that the world is capable of change; in this case a change for the better, a change for peace. This area of study has made progress thanks to the human elements of compassion and love of life that are present in the social scientists, especially the peace theorists, whose main aim is to construct peace in conflict situations where all too often, emotion rather than reason rule the day and the scientific tools of logic and rationality are virtually inexistent. The methods used in the resolution of conflict have not changed much over the years since the basic concepts of negotiation, compromise and mediation still hold today. However, time has shown that much more is required to sustain peace and avoid resorting to violence as a solution. Peace theorists have realised the essence of this, and many have drawn up their own theories on how a win-lose situation could be replaced by a win-win situation so as to guarantee a sustainable solution without the use of force.en_GB
