Abstract: When discussing theatre, one cannot ignore the fact that theatre forms an integral part of society. Theatre is an experience of art and life: places, people, language, stories, movements, designs, sounds and forms. In this dissertation I have focused my attention on 70 years of theatre history in Gozo between 1869 and 1939. The time limits were not chosen haphazardly. Although I have information that the French garrison locked in the Citadel in 1798 performed some plays, 1869 marks the beginning of theatre performances before the local public by the same locals. 1939 saw the temporary suspension of theatre activities due to World War II, but this activity was revived after the war. Another specific study has to be conducted on post-WWII theatre in Gozo.
