Abstract: A harbour is a geographical area made up of such improvement works and equipment as to permit, principally, the reception of ferries, including fishing vessels and recreational craft. The study is focused on Mgarr Harbour, civil port situated to the South East of Gozo. The importance of this natural harbour is twofold; first it serves as a transit point between Gozo and the main island of Malta and second it is a fishing port. Mgarr Harbour also has other ancillary roles, such that, it is the only yacht marina in Gozo. This makes it a multi-purpose port, and this factor has to be taken into account by any developer seeking its upgrading. Currently a new terminal is underway and it is in its initial stages. The aim of this study is to analyze and assess how access to the port area is being impacted by the development; with particular emphasis on the transport and social perspective. To analyses these perspectives qualitative and quantitative research methods are used.
