Noise is an inevitable source of pollution which is inseparable from human beings. Noise is detrimental to human health as well as deteriorates our living environment. Noise as a pollutant is a major deterrent worldwide. It is mainly concentrated in over-populated areas, areas with well developed and dense transport systems and places which are under going development. This dissertation is an analysis of traffic noise generated at the Mriehel by-pass, Qormi, Malta, and other noise sources produced in the neighbourhood, and their related effects on the residents. Both noise sources and effects were identified and analysed by means of field surveys, bibliographic research, questionnaires and land-use mapping. The results show that fireworks, which are temporary, are the most annoying noise source in the chosen area, followed by traffic noise, a permanent source of pollution. Furthermore, a set of measures are given which offer a better living environment with minimal noise pollution.en_GB
