Abstract: The story of the Great Siege is largely dominated by the Hospitaller knights, their exploits and their fighting prowess. It was after all, a war of their own making. For no sooner had this group of warriors settled their military Order in Malta in 15 30 than their galleys began scouring the Mediterranean sea, spearheading expeditions against the Ottoman Turks and their allies, the Barbary corsairs, and setting off in the process a succession of increasingly brazen raids and reprisals, culminating in Sultan Suleiman's invasion of the Island in 1565.
