Abstract: This thesis analyses the portrait of the women in the ‘Libro de buen amor’. Its author, Juan Ruiz composes this book by making use of a fictional autobiography, where the protagonist, the Archpriest, recounts his relationships with various types of women. Following the Archpriest's relationships, one concludes that man must diligently choose the good woman, instead of the bad woman. This is showcased in the fact that his wife has to help him towards the good love personified in the figure of God. The medieval literature shows hostility towards women and this is why, Juan Ruiz, like other medieval authors, transmits his wisdom through the warnings and advices directed to the reader. This masterpiece reflects the medieval society where it depicts the traditions and customs of the time.
