Una comparación de épocas a través de la obra y la película de ‘La casa de Bernarda Alba’ de Federico García Lorca

Abstract

The following investigation compares the era of the dictatorship with the era of the Spanish democratic transition through the play and the film of ‘La casa de Bernarda Alba’ of Federico Garcia Lorca. The objective of this work is to analyse the two sources of the work, that is, the first theatrical performances and the film which encapsulate two important episodes of social growth in the process of achievement of liberty in the Spanish society. In order to carry out this work, the research was based on books, articles extracted from newspapers, online journals and theatre magazines. Throughout this study, a general review of the play ‘La casa de Bernarda de Alba’ was conducted and a review of the author's life was reported. Also, the periods of the Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War have been studied in relation to the role of Lorca in these two major events of Spanish history. Moreover, the aesthetic aspects of the theatrical productions and the film and its differences in comparison with the original text of Lorca were investigated. The investigation concludes with the demonstration that ‘La casa de Bernarda Alba’ is a play which reflects the image of an oppressed Spain which the author himself had experienced.
