Abstract: | This dissertation explores the potential psychological effects a forensic expert may have following a series of crimes the scene of crime experts within the Malta police force, might be involved in. This research sought to establish whether potential psychological effects are present and if so, if they are long term or effects of spur of the moment. This research employed a qualitative design through the semi-structured interviews with five forensic experts. The main findings of this research demonstrate that there are in fact potential long-term effects within such experts, however, results show that these situations do not necessarily affect all of these experts the same way. Moreover, recommendations propose that studies focus more on the aftermath of such affects, such as why forensic personnel often ask to be transferred to other branches. Potential psychological effects may also be explored among experts outside of the police force. Furthermore, exploring how the character of an individual may change depending on such situations would also be feasible. In addition, individuals may be affected negatively by these potential psychological hurdles. Therefore, it is suggested that such individuals would be trained and supported in such cases. |
