Abstract: This dissertation attempts to analyse the role of the press in Malta between 1948 and 1959. Since it does not go into the purely legal aspect of the press, this study does not examine the press law of the period, nor does it discuss the numerous libel cases which were brought to court in that period. Moreover, l have purposely not discussed this study with the journalists of the time, either because they are dead or because they are, more or less, still politically involved., Besides, it was only by going, through the newspapers of the time that one could truly re-capture the journalistic spirit of the time. As regards the division of the chapters it is imperative to clarify one thing: the amount of interesting material found as my research progressed, have led me to dedicate two chapters to the Labour crisis and only one to the last phase of the integration issue. It should also be pointed out that where reference is made in the text to a particular issue of a newspaper no footnote reference is given for the obvious reason that the reference is in the text [...].
