Abstract: | Johannes Quintinus Haeduus (or Jean Quintin, as otherwise known), was born on 20 January, 1500 at Autun in France. He jointed the Order of St. John of Jerusalem and was in Malta with them from 1530 to 1536. During this period he wrote the Insulae Melitae descriptio, which he finished in 1533 and published in Lyons in France in 1536. This description of Malta was re-edited in 1540, 1541, 1566,1600 and in 1723-25 and translated incompletely into Italian in 1545 and 1566. It treats of the geographical, archaeological and sociological aspects of the island and it includes some classical references to it. Here we shall be concerned with the classical references to the temples of Juno and Hercules in Malta, whose remains Quintinus says he saw . |
