In most forms of technology today some type of data logging is required, be it providing GPS data, speed, temperature, etc. Having available a modular technology which is easily customizable to accommodate for upgrades is regarded as an asset. Most of the electronics available nowadays accommodate for an upgrade in software, which is aimed to enhance the device. This project is intended to provide a customizable environment for logging data, which similarly to a firmware, may be upgraded and used for diverse applications. This framework shall be implemented on a Xilinx Spartan6 FPGA. The latter's architecture allows for a 32-bit soft-core processor to be implemented within. The designed hardware within this project monitors an analogue voltage, GPS position, speed, time and date, whilst providing SMS updates via a GSM module. Such a system may be used in different data logging environments such as monitoring of weather, transport systems and industrial applications.en_GB
