Title: Exploring the nature of flows through the juxtaposition of tactile painting and digital animation

Abstract: This study developed and tested the idea of combining tactile painting with digital animation. Through examining the relationship between these two divergent media, the engagement in an artistic exploration identified the characteristics of each medium independently, together with recognising the effects they have on each other when viewed side by side. In this dissertation, prior studies offered a descriptive amount of information to historical achievements gained throughout the history of the arts and demonstrated development as time progressed. By reflecting on literature, an outline of achievements throughout Abstract Expressionism was expressed, which highlighted the importance of the tactile and humanistic elements dominant at the time. In turn, this was later transformed with the introduction of technology within the arts, which deviated to a concern for the intangible and reproducible elements that this medium sustains. To date, rare systematic investigations have considered the juxtaposition of tactile painting and digital animation, making this study furthermore significant as it aims to put this concept to test. Subsequently, the findings from this artistic research prove that the unification of these two contrasting media can generate new ideas within the art scene, shedding new perspectives to experiencing an artwork. Contrary to our expectations drawn from Walter Benjamin’s work, this study intends to shine a positive light on digital technology, proving that it can be used as an enhancer to traditional art rather than a destroyer.
