The story of the Maltese forest

Abstract

As Minister responsible for Agriculture, Forestry included, I am more than pleased when officials within the Departments of which I am responsible, show such deep interest in their work that they manage to dedicate much of their spare time to increase their knowledge of the subject. Such is the case with Mr Joseph Borg who is not only active in certain voluntary organisations but has also on more than one occasion contributed to the diffusion of knowledge on the subject by means of good publications. "The Story of the Maltese Forest" is a case in point. Though Forestry may seem a strange meaningless word for Malta Mr Borg has managed, through research, to show us that we have from hundreds of years ago made the best use of trees, either as a raw material or as a means of shelter and embellishment. This interest in afforestation had its ups and downs along the ages and such was the importance given to afforestation. Presently we have managed, with the help of voluntary organisations to which Mr Borg gives a direct or indirect help in management, to in still in the population the feeling that trees are something to be cared for. At Government level we are participating fully in all meetings organised by international organisations, such as FAO, regarding trees and through these meetings we are increasing our know-how in their care and cultivation. Mr Borg's publication will definetly help in this respect. May I augur that this book will find itself on the shelves of the leading libraries of the island as well as in schools. I wish Mr. Borg. the fullest success in his endeavours from which we may all reap benefits now and in the future. [excerpt]
