dc.description.abstract | No food, no life, no history. This is an undeniable truth. Food and the history of humankind are inseparable; one may say that they ‘feed’ on each other. Food is a primary necessity. The acquisition and preparation of food has held a central position in the development of societies, from prehistoric times to the present day. As the French epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillant-Savarin claims, ‘Gastronomy governs the whole life of man.’ Food formed the basis of the greatest social revolution in history, while laying down the most basic foundations of those structures and institutions we today refer to as ‘civilization’. | en_GB |
