Abstract: Malta is facing various problems in the agricultural sector. Perhaps the most important of them is land fragmentation brought about by the present land lease law. The amount of land available for lease and for sale is extremely limited. This situation does not augur well for the inclusion of new people into the sector and makes it very difficult for young people with no capital to embark on a career in agriculture. Land consolidation, the amendment of the laws and other schemes are needed to give a new lease of life to our rural sector.
