Virtual butlers, or virtual companions, try to imitate the behaviour of human beings in a believable way. They interact with the user through speech, understand spoken requests, are able to converse with the user, and show some form of emotion and personality. Many of the existing chatbots and companions which currently exist rely on the manual creation of a huge corpus of possible question - reply pairs. In this thesis we explore a method in which this corpus is created automatically through various techniques. The corpus that is created is generated from a set of television series scripts. Our aim is to replicate the end result of existing companions by using television scripts.en_GB
