Abstract: | Ja Bahar (‘O Sea’) is an aleatory inspired by the tragedies of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life. In this sense, the composition may be considered as a lament expressing suffering, grief and, sometimes, failed aspirations. The silent pauses serve as moments of reflection on the harsh experiences that such migrants endure during their journey to a ‘brighter’ future. The music evokes sounds from Arabic music that merge with a range of techniques aimed at maintaining interest and kindling reflection. This composition was performed for the first time by Luca Cipriano at the Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata". |
