Abstract: | Ever since mobile telephony was invented, voice services were offered by the operators to enable people to communicate everywhere. With the introduction of video calling, people are able to visualize the person they are talking to. This increases the bandwidth consumption per call, thus compression and transmission techniques were developed to compress the data sent. When Voice over Internet Protocol was implemented, it was a viable option for both users and operators. As with base stations, when users moved out of the transmission range, a handover had to be made between base stations to avoid dropping the call. The aim is to provide the user with an adequate quality of service without requiring any configurations from the device. A testbed was implemented with the above requirements in mind and configured in various ways to extract better results and optimise the setup as best as possible to achieve smaller handover times, reducing the data loss and preventing a downfall in the quality of service delivered. All results succeeded in delivering an excellent quality even when the roaming device was temporarily not connected to any access point at a given time. In spite of achieving a good quality, two of the testbeds were able to handle the process efficient to a higher degree than the others. They could also allow for four handovers in the same time the others completed their first handover. |
