Abstract: Background: Malta, like the rest of Mediterranean Europe, faces a dramatic shift away from the traditional Mediterranean diet as the global food industry has removed prior barriers to food choice while introducing new ones pertaining to an overall loss in the varieties of crop and livestock. As rates of obesity and other non-communicable diseases continue to rise, especially in vulnerable groups, understanding accessibility towards a healthy diet becomes crucial. To avoid subjectivity, the terms ‘healthy’, ‘clean’, and ‘fair’ have been defined within the context of sustainability, given that food accessibility is ultimately tied to the wellbeing of both the individual and their various environments. Research question: This study aimed to set the foundation for the investigation of food access in Malta by exploring the current local food system and consumers’ and producers’ perceptions in order to determine what specific issues should be addressed in future research. The main research question was: Can good quality, healthy and clean food be also fair, i.e. at a price accessible to low income consumers, without compromising on fair conditions and a decent pay for producers?
