Abstract: The Internet has brought with it huge advancements in the use of computers. Today its use is vast with millions of web servers hosting web sites and web applications some of them used daily. This technology advancement brought with it security issues. Security attacks are becoming more and more common. The more confidential information is put on the Internet, the more attackers try to get hold of this information. Attackers try to compromise a system by exploiting vulnerabilities in code. These vulnerabilities pose a threat to the system according to how much the security mechanisms are able to defend the system so as not to allow these vulnerabilities from being exploited. Security mechanisms pose a very important part in a system since they may stop an attack from happening. The project aims to find out how much risk buffer overflow and OS command injection vulnerabilities pose to a LAMP system configuration inside a DMZ despite the security mechanisms which protect this system from being intruded.
