Abstract: The aim of this project was to provide a simple, cost effective and easy-to-handle speech interface for interactive systems with a simple microprocessor-based architecture. For the constructor, a basic software support was also provided. Thus, the project has two separate but complementary sections, the hardware and the software. There are several potential applications for speech synthesis, and my aim was to design a complete system that produced speech. and which was small in size and simple to use, did not require any external memory, could produce words, phrases or sentences with minimal external intervention, and did not require the use of a (personal) computer to 'work. Possible applications I had in mind being currency displays in banks, vending machines. automobile systems. warning systems, intelligent alarms, answering machines and telephone boxes. This system would also be very suitable for portable speech aids for speech impaired persons and for use as an aid for blind persons.
