Abstract: Since percussive instruments are mainly un-tuned, a common method to play them is by improvisation. Therefore when a piece of music is played again, it will be played in a slightly different way since the notes are being improvised. To overcome this, the music can be written down as sheet music. The problem is that not everyone who can play percussive instruments is able to write the music that is being improvised. Furthermore writing music may be a tedious thing to do. Conventionally, when writing sheet music the musicians/composers play parts of the music in their minds or on an instrument and record the notes which comprise that section of music. This is a long and repetitive process. That is where this project comes into play as its role is to record what a musician is playing and automatically create the sheet music of what has just been played. The following project will start off by discussing the basic knowledge one needs to be able to carry out the job, along with what current research there is on the subject of music transcription. Following this the project will continue with the design and implementation of the system. Results, future works and conclusions will then end this work.
