The availability and effectiveness of educational programmes for inmates and ex-inmates in Malta

Abstract

This study analysed how educational/vocational programmes, delivered locally by two entities, can help inmates and ex-inmates re-enter society successfully after their prison release. The research tool begged a qualitative approach using audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews with six professionals. Thematic analysis evidenced that the outcome from these programmes depends on how much the offenders want to accept help and are ready to change their life for the better. The choice of the right instructors to deliver these programs and the use of the appropriate methodology and pedagogy use to deliver these programmes, were identified as invaluable and vital necessities for the success of these programmes. Educational professionals who have direct contact with the development of these programmes, were interviewed. This allowed richer, realistic, and more accurate findings. Nonetheless, the programmes may be considered successful if the targeted audience attending such programmes obtain the necessary skills for their future job prospects. The findings suggest that educational/vocational programmes can improve the inmates’ and ex-inmates’ chances of finding employment and avoiding recidivism. However, such programmes need to be more refined and improved so that they can attract a higher number of offenders to participate in these programmes.
