Abstract: | Living in small houses is not a new phenomenon, with such homes being historically prevalent among Western civilisations; however, downsized dwellings have recently started to experience a resurgence, for socioeconomic reasons and as a solution to pressures from rapid urbanisation. While such dwellings are receiving increasing research attention, environmental sustainability has thus far seldom been the impetus of related research. Additionally, there is limited literature that explores factors influencing the decision to downsize, especially among youths. This research aimed to gauge interest and willingness to downsize among youths in Malta, identifying the main motivators and barriers. A sequential mixed-method approach was employed, combining a survey with Gen Z students and focus groups with both Gen Z and Gen Y individuals. Results revealed that half of Gen Z students are interested in downsizing, with a statistically significant relationship between nature relatedness and willingness to downsize. The main motivating factors among both Gen Z and Gen Y participants were monetary benefits, simpler living, and reduced environmental impact. The barriers across both generations revolved largely around family prospects and spatial standards. Additionally, the applicability of such homes in the context of the Maltese Islands was noted as a concern. This research also highlighted strong demand for more sustainable housing options among young people. |
