The use of computers in the administration of Gian Francesco Abela Upper Lyceum Complex

Abstract

This study was undertaken with two specific aims in mind. Firstly, it was intended to investigate the extent to which computers have been exploited by the administration in the largest Sixth Form College on these islands. Secondly, as managers are daily becoming more aware of the potential of computers as management tools and as the headmaster's role is increasingly being regarded as that of a manager, it was thought desirable to research more deeply into the benefits that may be accrued from a full computerisation of the administration of a school. This study contains details of (a) the computerisation of various aspects of the Sixth Form and (b) information about computer hardware and software that is available for the computerisation of a school administration. For this reason the following methodology has been adopted. Information about (a) was obtained by a series of informal conversations with those members of the administration who were more actively involved in this sector as well as more formal interviews with the same people, based on a prepared questionnaire. For information about (b) various books and publications were consulted (see Bibliography). Besides, hardware and software available at the Sixth Form was inspected and its limitations discussed with the main users who kindly provided some useful demonstrations.
