Abstract: The identity of the island of Melita on which, according to St. Luke (Acts xxviii, I), St. Paul was shipwrecked, around 60 A.D., while on his way to Rome to face trial before Caesar (Acts xxv, 1-12), is a subject of debate among scholars but, since at least the Middle Ages, the Maltese have tenaciously maintained that it was Malta. The other chief contender to the honour is the Dalmatian island of Mljet, previously known as Meleda, off Dubrovnic, in the Adriatic, which was also called Melite (Melite Illyrica) in classical times. ·
