Abstract: | Noise is one of the scourges of the modern world, an unwanted product of our technological civilization increasingly polluting our daily life. To the din that assails us in the streets, offices and factories and even our homes, a new noise will soon be added; the reverberating boom of supersonic jetliners. We are paying, in nervous strain, noise induced deafness and other physical and mental ills, the price of faster transport and an "easier" life. Yet ways can be found to stop this noise invasion, thus making our Earth a quieter environment to live in. For example, automobile noises can be reduced by mere effective exhaust silencers and also by non- slam doors and boot lids. In building construction, electro-mechanical drills may replace the clattering noise of pneumatic drills and special screens can be made to absorb the din of compressors. As far as aircraft noise is concerned, this can be reduced by more efficient silencers and by enforcement of stricter. flying regulations. The latter mainly would consist of steeper descent glide paths and controlled take-offs, although this is easier said than done, since you would have to take into consideration the performance of the aircrafts using that particular airdried, so as not to introduce any risk to the human lives involved.
