Abstract: The primary aim of a breast screening program is to reduce mortality from breast cancer through early detection in the asymptomatic female population. These women have different needs and anxieties. Therefore, mixing these women with symptomatic patients was avoided by commissioning dedicated premises for the breast screening facility separate from the main hospital. These premises are located in the capital city, Valletta, and are sited on the waterfront of the Grand Harbour. This is one of several adjacent buildings of historical importance that were recently refurbished. This location is served by good public transportation connections. A modern breast screening program requires a corresponding customized IT infrastructure. A local IT company was contracted with the functional design of the required Web-based software for the Maltese breast screening program. [excerpt]
