dc.description.abstractEducation from the earliest school years should be directed towards the all-round development of the human personality and towards the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and economic progress of the community, as well as to the inculcation of a deep respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. When critically analysing our system we find that the full development of the child's potential, which after all is the fundamental aim of education, is not being adequately catered for. Indeed, our children should be more encouraged and provided with opportunities in which they can be actively engaged. Our classrooms should be full of students really motivated to learn, eager to use their minds, to question, challenge, probe and discover and thus be proud of what they have accomplished. Unfortunately this is not the situation in our schools where sheer competition dominates over any other considerations. Furthermore most of the teachers are talking all the time while the students remain passive. In today's world which is dominated by constant change, the school must prepare its students to meet the challenge of change if it wants to adequately prepare them for the world of work. However many students leave school lacking the skills, attitudes and knowledge which will be needed in the future.
