| Abstract: | Formed by cellist Valerie Welbanks and flutist Helen Vidovich in 2009, with pianist Zubin Kanga joining in 2017, the Marsyas Trio has established a remarkably diverse repertory ranging from Clementi to young composers. While this is not unprecedented (thinking back to Domaine Musicale concerts which programmed Gabrieli Canzons alongside Henze and Messiaen), it is still a relative rarity in an increasingly specialised field. In The Theatre of Air, their fourth release, and the first with Kanga, is a testament to this openness: it comprises more than a century’s worth of music (historically speaking; the disc lasts just over an hour) by female composers.
