dc.description.abstractTHE success of the Labour Party in the election of June 1971 brought about an abrupt change of direction in Malta's development. Malta achieved formal independence in 1964, but throughout the 1960's she continued to manifest signs of that peculiar state of mind which sometimes affects small colonial territories-that of being more British than the British. The Nationalist Government led by George Borg Olivier was a conservative administration which emphasised the continuity of Malta's links with the U.K., while pursuing a closer relationship with Western Europe through association with the EEC.
