This study essentially dealt with holographic interferometry. Its main purposes were to investigate whether it was possible to make holograms using the apparatus available; to improve the quality of the holograms; to use the holograms for holographic interferometry. The experiments were carried out in the Optics Lab II, on the first floor of the Science building. Results show that the quality of the transmission holograms was acceptably good. On the other hand. reflection holograms, being more susceptable to vibrations, were not of a good quality. In the double exposure hologram experiments, in-plane deformation and stresses were studied. The results obtained could not be compared to theoretical ones for in-plane displacement only, since the object under examination moved slightly in the line-of-sight direction between exposures. This affected the number and shape of the holographic fringes. Furthermore, strain gauges could not be used whilst doing these experiments, since the strain bridge was not available.en_GB
