EU membership : a missed opportunity for Cypriot reunification?

Abstract

The Cyprus conflict has always maintained a considerable degree of importance on the EU agenda. Although the quest for a settlement continues till this day, Cyprus' accession has helped narrow down the divisive factors of the Island and has provided a greater sense of security for both communities. However, 'goodwill and mutual confidence must precede a peaceful and lasting resolution of the Cyprus problem'. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether EU membership was a missed opportunity for Cypriot reunification or whether it has been a major step forward in consolidating peace.
