Abstract: Studies of Maltese society have observed a shift in the values of the family, the secularization of sexuality and an increase in the incidence of marriage failure. In late modernity, Malta is fast turning into a city-island at the crossroads of Mediterranean and Western European cultures. On the European map of values, however, Malta remains an exception in its overall resistance to the civil settlement of unsuccessful marriages by the legalization of divorce, but shares with other neighbouring Southern European countries a predominant catholic family culture.
