Wave measurement in hydraulic models

Abstract

In conjunction with the Civil Engineers I was asked to do some wave measurement s concerning the height and frequency of waves generated by means of a paddle,

Last year the Civil Engineers constructed a model

of Monoel island with a scale of 1:100, Mechanical waves are produced by 4 paddles connected to a motor, and by varying its speed, different heights of waves are produced, Different amplitude of saves can be obtained at various points in the model and by increasing the speed of the motor, increased heights of waves are generated.

My work is concerned with measuring the various heights of the waves that are being generated at different places, and the frequency of the waves that are being produced,

The advantage of my work is that direct readings Can be taken and it does not involve any elaborate work. So to now the Civil Engineers have been measuring the height of the waves by the Venier Scale Reading, which entails a lot of strain. Now with the help of the various circuits, which I have constructed, one can easily read the value of the height of the waves, by reading off a value indicated by the pointer of 4 meter,

As to frequency measurements, this is automatically done cy reading off a value whiten 15 indicated on a counter every ten seconds. A frequency value of up to 10% accuracy is obtained.

Like every other project, this one does not have a definite end, In fact the apparatus which I have constructed in this work could be extended to give measurements of the swell obtained by the blowing of winds, and also the measurement of the wavelength i.e. the distance between one wave and the next.
