Monitoring of protocol packets over a local area network

Abstract

The aim of this project was to implement a system capable of monitoring and decoding different protocol packets over an Ethernet local area network Before the monitor was developed, it was decided that it should be compatible with standard software and hardware interfaces already available. The obvious advantage of this would be that any user connected to such a LAN could load this monitor on his PC without the need of any modifications. This monitor was also designed so that through it, test packets could be sent and received. This could be used to test any receive routines designed for the monitor. Also, since this monitor was designed to be compatible with any PC connected to the LAN, other applications such as the testing of different nodes connected to the LAN could be developed.
