Abstract: Computer controlled equipment, make extensive use of stepping motors, yet there are many individuals who are unaware of the many applications for which these devices may be used. This thesis is involved with the study of stepping motors, covering principles, theory, driving techniques and applications. Comparisons of relative merits of motor types and techniques adopted in a particular situation are presented. Simulation software for step response is also included. An X-Y table is implemented, which involved the design of the mechanical setup, drive circuits, computer insertion card and software; both for a "Hardware Intensive Approach" and a "Software Intensive Approach". The X-Y table is also emulated on the computer screen and control software is rigorously written in assembly language.
