Abstract: | This project is divided into two sections. The first section considers the different methods and techniques used in the control of substations while the second section considers the actual implementation proposed. The three basic systems investigated are power line carrier system, optical cable system and a telecommunication system using telephone lines. The aim of this project as regards the implementation part, is to design an automated system that monitors and controls various electrical parameters and devices present In a substation from a remote end. The technique used to accomplish the final result is that to use the public switched telephone network as the telecommunication link between the two remote ends. Commands are conveyed by means of specifically designed modems coupled with a PC via specifically designed computer interfacing cards. The overall system is governed by the control software, written in high-level language, which generates the necessary control signals from a PC with the aid of interfacing circuitry. The overall implementation of this project involves electronic design, control, computer hardware and extensive software programming techniques. |
