Abstract: The Semantic Desktop builds over Bush's Memex vision and focuses on enhancing the personal information management (PIM) pro- cess through the integration and presentation of content found on the user's desktop. In line with the Semantic Desktop's philosophy we present SemChat, which is a semantic chat client component. We discuss how SemChat allows personal information related to persons, locations, organisations, dates and events to be extracted from chat conversations and to be integrated into the user's Personal Information Model (PIMO), with annotated events being directly exported to an event scheduler. We also discuss SemChat's search facility, which allows users to search for relevant concepts within their personal chat-information space. Further- more we elaborate on our initial evaluation efforts which proved to be very promising.
