Conservation and preservation of books at the National Library of Malta : environmental problems

Abstract

The most critical element affecting the longevity of library material including books, other than their own inherent physical composition is the environment in which they are used and stored. The aim of this study was to investigate the environment problems encountered with books at the National Library of Malta, mainly those related to temperature, humidity, light, biological infestation and pollution. This study sought to investigate each aspect of environmental hazards to conservation and preservation of books. The proper environmental conditions necessary to maintain the collection safely in a stable condition was discussed. Measurements of temperature, humidity and light were taken at the National Library and compared with the safe accepted standards, and tentative suggestions were given where possible. The type of artificial lighting used was also dealt with. The needed information was acquired through interviewing people working at the library itself. On site inspection of the environment where the books are kept. Appropriate instruments to measure temperature, humidity and light were used. Measurements were taken at different times of the day and over a period of time.
