| Abstract: | The Instrument Landing System (ILS) principle is based on directional radio beams modulated so as to enable airborne equipment to identify the beam centres, hence defining the correct approach to a particular runway. The total system comprises of three parts, each with a transmitter on the ground and receiver and signal processor on the aircraft. Lateral steering is provided by the localizer; the glide slope provides vertical steering and the marker beacons give the distance checks. The aim of this project is to simulate the above, using infra-red beams, and using this in formation so as to control stepper-motors for vertical and horizontal steering. Hence the system can be considered as an exercise in positional control. |
