Abstract: The process of one-side butt-welding of ship's hull plates using a ceramic backing was analysed as carried out in actual shipbuilding. This involved both non-destructive and destructive testing. The economic aspects of the process were also studied and compared with those of other conventional processes. The parameters that were investigated are: root run process, edge preparation, restart problems, site effects, and ceramic condition, while edge conditions and weld characteristics were closely monitored. It was concluded from this work that the advantages carried by this process can be realised in practice by adequate operator training in the use of related equipment, and training in the preparation of the seam and backing. The effect of each parameter on the strength of the resulting weld was determined, together with the precautions to be taken when applying the ceramic backing method in actual shipbuilding.
