Abstract: Most-engineering problems involve some type of non-linearities. These are dealt within the finite element method by means of iterative analysis. The objectives of the project were to:
 Learn about the basic principles of the finite element method through a simple elastic example
 Learn how to use part of the finite element package Ansys, namely how to use its pre-processor, solver and post-processor for structural analysis
 To use Finite Element (FE) non-linear analysis to verify results and conclusions obtained by D G Moffat, M F Hsieh and M Lynch in “An assessment of ASME III and CEN TC54 methods of determining plastic and limit loads for pressure system components” of the “Journal of Strain Analysis” Vol. 36 no. 3 pp301-312
