dc.description.abstract | Conventional wisdom in Malta states that "it's not what you know, it's who you know that will help you achieve your aspirations". The disappointed and the excluded use it as a jibe towards those in power. The power of networks, of relationships between people, can be translated into concrete action to the benefit of the parties involved. One such network is that of clientelism and patronage which in a small society is of great significance. Such a network can facilitate and improve considerably one's way of living. It may assist one to obtain quick and fruitful attention by a well-known consultant at the state hospital, by a bank manager to further one's financial prospects, by a civil servant to obtain much needed permits and licences, by an employer to further career prospects, by a board member for support for award of a contract of work. The list may be unending. Influence may be found through contacts in various fields, social, political & economic. Influence which may lead to corrupt practices in order that objectives may be achieved. All advance the position of those within the network to the detriment of the excluded others irrespective of merit and ability. [...] | en_GB |
