Abstract: Francais - niveau intermediaire is the fruit of teamwork. The French Department at the Junior College of the University of Malta has always strived to achieve the aims set out in the respective Matsec syllabuses at intermediate level in as holistic a manner as possible. Obviously, with only two hours a week at our disposal this often proved to be an exercise in wishful thinking. So it became imperative that we put our minds together as a team in order to produce challenging material for those students motivated enough to dedicate at least another two hours a week to the subject. Officially, the rationale behind the Intermediate Matriculation French, like that of other subjects at the same level, has been since its inception the consolidation of the skills already acquired at SEC level. However, the programme contains components targeting new aptitudes that require more cognitive acumen on the part of students, such as the summary of a non-literary text in French, literary appreciation and the study of specific issues concerning French civilisation. Besides, more is expected of them both with regard to oral skills and free composition. Reaching and maintaining the level of competence or standards required in all these areas takes time and painstaking efforts on the part of students and lecturers alike.
