Abstract: This book discusses the notion of 'fare bella figura' and its importance with respect to discourse strategies used in a ladies' club in Chicago. The author, Gloria Nardini adopts an ethnographic approach. In fact, she was a participant observer in monthly meetings of the Collandia Ladies' Club and as she was also the club's recording secretary, this provided her with several opportunities to tape-record meetings. In all she used thirty-one tapes and took notes on ee:ich of the tapes which she had previously transcribed. The author also conducted face-to-face interviews with some members of this club.
